Long Dan Cao, derived from the root of southern Gentiana species, is a potent and bitter herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to remove heat and dampness from the shao yao and tsieu yin meridians. In granule form (Ke Li), it is easy to use and ideal for modern applications.

Action according to the tradition:

  • clears Heat and dries Dampness
  • sedates Heat in JueYin

Contraindications:

  • Use of Long Dan Cao is contraindicated in patiens who have deficiency and cold of the Spleen and Stomach, qi deficiency, or blood deficiency.
  • Long Dan Cao may be taken before meals. A small dose of Long Dan Cao taken before meals may stimulate the secretion of gastric acid and enhance digestion and absorption. In patients with a sensitive gastrointestinal system, however, Long Dan Cao may be taken with meals.
  • Long Dan Cao, in large dosages, is sometimes associated with side effects such as headache, facial flushing, and dizziness
  • Use of this herb may be associated with possible drowsiness and sedation. Therefore, individuals who take this herb should exercise caution if driving or operating heavy machinery.

extract 5:1 radix Gentianae

0.5-1.0 gram to be taken once daily, 15 minutes after meals, dissolved in boiled water.
